Thomas Arkell bought a 13th-century watermill in idyllic countryside in 1827,
and he began brewing on the site in 1865. The millwheel is still used to drive small pumps
and machinery. The brewery was owned and run by a direct family
descendant, Claude Arkell until his death in 2007 when it passed to Claude's cousins, Peter
and James from Arkells Brewery. Donnington supplies its own 17 tied houses and a number of free
trade outlets. Bottle-conditioned beer is available.
The brewery is a member of the Independent Family Brewers of Britain (IFBB).
